Obstetric Ultrasound
Obstetric ultrasound provides a window into your pregnancy, allowing assessment of your baby’s growth, development, and wellbeing at different stages.
Using sound waves, the scan produces real-time images that help monitor progress and provide reassurance throughout pregnancy. It is safe for both mother and baby.
Most scans are performed over the abdomen. Occasionally, an internal (transvaginal) scan may be recommended, particularly in early pregnancy or for assessment of the cervix.
A sonographer performs the scan, with review by a radiologist to ensure accurate interpretation.
Obstetric ultrasound may include:
- First trimester — dating, assessment for twins, confirmation of viability, nuchal translucency screening, pre-eclampsia screening
- Second trimester — detailed morphology (anatomy) scan, cervical length assessment, growth and wellbeing assessment
- Third trimester — growth and wellbeing assessment, fetal position, placental position, amniotic fluid assessment, 3D/4D imaging

We watch development with steady gaze,
And how each part continues on to grow.
We check wellbeing, movement, strength, and size,
And how your baby thrives within their space,
With careful views of cervix, growth, and form,
Each stage unfolding with a quiet grace.
Then later still, in final weeks we see,
Your baby’s size, their comfort, and their flow,
The fluid, placenta, and position too,
All helping guide the path as birth draws close.
And sometimes, in a softly rendered view,
A face appears—so small, so soon to be,
In 3D or 4D, a fleeting glimpse,
Of who your child is soon for you to see.
All safe, all gentle, carefully designed,
A window into life—so close, so kind.
