Fine Needle Aspiration

Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a minimally invasive procedure used to collect a small sample of cells from a lump or area of concern for further testing. It is commonly performed to assess thyroid nodules, lymph nodes, breast lumps, and other soft tissue abnormalities.

Before the procedure, the radiologist will assess the area and review any relevant medical imaging to confirm that fine needle aspiration is the most appropriate test, and that alternative sampling methods, such as a core biopsy, are not more suitable.

Using ultrasound imaging, the radiologist can clearly see the area in real time and guide a very fine needle precisely into the target. This accuracy helps ensure the correct area is sampled while minimising discomfort.

A local anaesthetic is always used to numb the skin before the procedure begins. Once the area is comfortable, a fine needle is gently inserted into the area of interest, and a small sample of cells is collected. The sample is then sent to a laboratory, where it is evaluated under a microscope.

The procedure is usually quick, and most patients experience only mild discomfort. There is no need to wait afterwards, and you can return to your normal daily activities unless advised otherwise. Some minor tenderness or bruising at the site may occur but typically settles quickly.
