Breast Ultrasound

Focused assessment of the breast to investigate lumps, pain, or changes in breast tissue.

Breast ultrasound is a focused imaging test used to assess specific areas of the breast in detail. It is commonly performed to investigate symptoms such as a lump, localised pain, or changes in the breast, or to further evaluate findings from other imaging.

Using sound waves, ultrasound provides real-time images that help distinguish between different types of tissue, such as fluid-filled cysts and solid lesions, and can clarify the nature of a finding.

The examination involves gently moving a probe over the breast and is typically quick and comfortable.

A sonographer performs the scan, with results reviewed by a radiologist.

Breast ultrasound is commonly used to:

  • Assess newly detected lumps
  • Investigate focal pain
  • Further evaluate mammogram findings
  • Monitor previously identified abnormalities
  • Assess infection or nipple changes
  • Guide procedures such as biopsy or aspiration when required

When something feels a little new,
A change, a lump, a different view,
An ultrasound can help to see
What’s happening beneath the surface quietly.

With sound waves moving to and fro,
It shows what we need to know,
Distinguishing what’s fluid, what is not,
Bringing clarity to each small spot.

A gentle probe across the skin,
No radiation used within,
Just clear, real-time images to guide
A careful look at what’s inside.

For pain, for changes, or something found,
Or questions raised on other scans around,
It helps to focus, refine, and see
The nature of what that change may be.

And if needed, it can guide the way,
For sampling safely on the day,
With precision, calm, and thoughtful care—
Answers gathered, clear and fair.

Though it may bring a moment’s concern,
It’s a step toward answers you can learn—
Simple, focused, and carefully done,
To understand what’s going on.
