Gynaecology Ultrasound
Gynaecology ultrasound is used to assess the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding pelvic structures in the investigation of a range of symptoms and conditions. It provides real-time imaging using sound waves and does not involve ionising radiation.
Examinations may be performed transabdominally or via a transvaginal approach, with the latter offering higher-resolution assessment of the endometrium and adnexal structures.
A sonographer performs the scan, with images reviewed and reported by a radiologist.
Gynaecology ultrasound may include:
- Pelvic ultrasound (transabdominal and/or transvaginal) — assessment of the uterus, endometrium, tubes and ovaries, for pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, early pregnancy, fibroids, and ovarian nodules
- Complex pelvic ultrasound — targeted assessment for endometriosis, adenomyosis, and other causes of chronic pelvic pain
- HyCoSy — assessment of fallopian tube patency in the investigation of infertility
- Saline sonohysterogram — evaluation of the endometrial cavity for polyps, fibroids, or structural abnormalities
- Transperineal ultrasound — assessment of the pelvic floor for prolapse, incontinence, and postpartum changes

When something’s off, or not quite right,
Or cycles change without invite,
An ultrasound can help us see
What’s going on internally.
With gentle scans (and sometimes more),
A closer look we can explore,
To check the uterus and ovaries too,
And find the cause that’s troubling you.
For pain, for bleeding, or fertility plans,
We take a careful, detailed scan,
From cysts to fibroids, small or grand,
We help to understand what’s planned.
Sometimes a closer view is best,
A transvaginal scan for clearer tests,
Quick and precise, it helps us see
The details more definitively.
For tubes and pathways yet unknown,
We check if they are open, clear, and shown,
And for the lining, fluid may assist
To show what otherwise might be missed.
And at the base, where support is key,
We check how things are meant to be,
For function, strength, and how things move—
All part of keeping you in the groove.
It’s quick, it’s safe, and thoughtfully done,
With answers gathered one by one—
So while it may not sound like fun,
It helps keep everything… well-run.
