General Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a versatile imaging test used to examine a wide range of organs and soft tissues. It is often the first step in investigating symptoms such as pain, swelling, or a palpable lump.
By using sound waves to create live images, ultrasound allows dynamic assessment of structures within the body, helping to identify abnormalities and guide further care. It does not involve radiation and is suitable for patients of all ages.
During the scan, a small probe is moved over the skin with gel to obtain clear images. The examination is typically straightforward and well tolerated.
A sonographer performs the scan, with images reviewed by a radiologist to ensure accurate reporting.
General ultrasound may include:
- Abdomen — liver, bile ducts, veins and arteries, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen
- Renal tract — kidneys, ureter, bladder, prostate, adrenal glands
- Scrotum (testes, epididymis, spermatic cord) and penis
- Neck — thyroid, parathyroid, parotid glands, submandibular glands, lymph nodes
- Lumps and swellings
- Abdominal wall and groin, including hernia assessment

If something’s sore, or strange, or new,
An ultrasound may help find out for you.
With sound waves bouncing to and fro,
We take a look beneath the surface glow.
No radiation, nothing to fear,
Just a little gel, it’s a bit cold here,
A handheld probe that glides with ease,
Capturing images with quiet expertise.
From liver, spleen, and pancreas too,
To bile ducts and gallbladder in view,
The abdomen’s secrets can all be revealed—
No mysteries left carefully concealed.
Kidneys, bladder, prostate in sight,
Adrenal glands included just right,
Following the urinary tract along the way,
To see how things are working day to day.
Scrotum and penis, checked with care,
With testes and structures all imaged there,
Epididymis, cord—nothing missed,
All gently examined on the list.
The neck as well, from glands to nodes,
Thyroid and more in careful modes,
Parotid, submandibular too,
All mapped out clearly into view.
Lumps and bumps beneath the skin,
We take a closer look within,
And in the groin or abdominal wall,
We check for hernias—big or small.
It’s quick, it’s simple, and usually pain-free,
With answers provided efficiently,
So while it may seem a curious scene—
It’s just smart imaging… calm and clean.
