Ultrasound-Guided Drainage
Ultrasound-guided drainage is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove fluid collections from the body, such as cysts, abscesses, or other fluid build-up that may be causing pain, swelling, or infection.
Using real-time ultrasound imaging, the radiologist can accurately locate the fluid collection and guide a needle into the area. In some cases, the fluid can be removed with a single aspiration. If ongoing drainage is needed, a small soft tube (drain) may be inserted to allow fluid to continue to drain over time.
For procedures involving a larger needle or when a drain is inserted, local anaesthetic is always used to numb the area and keep you comfortable. If the target is very small, a fine needle may be used and local anaesthetic may not be required. Most patients experience minimal discomfort, although some pressure may be felt during the procedure.
If a drain is placed, it is secured in position and connected to a small collection device. The drain may remain in place for a short period, depending on the amount of fluid and how quickly it resolves. You will be given clear instructions on how to care for the drain and when it will be removed.
The procedure is usually quick and well tolerated, with many patients experiencing relief of symptoms soon after drainage. The fluid may be sent to pathology or microbiology for analysis to help guide further treatment.

Where fluid gathers, quiet and concealed,
And causes ache or swelling yet unknown,
With sound waves soft, the hidden is revealed,
A gentle path is carefully then shown.
The radiologist, with steady care,
Guides slender needle to the waiting space,
To draw away what should not linger there,
And bring relief with calm and measured grace.
If more is needed, softly placed within,
A small drain rests to let the fluid go,
Until the body finds its balance again,
And healing follows in a steady flow.
For larger steps, the skin is gently numbed,
While finer needles may need little done,
And through it all, though quiet and precise,
Each careful act is guided to restore.
