Cortisone Injection
A cortisone injection is a commonly used treatment to reduce pain and inflammation in joints, tendons, bursae, and other soft tissues. It is often recommended for conditions where inflammation is contributing to symptoms and limiting movement.
The skin is carefully cleaned, and under ultrasound guidance, the radiologist accurately places the injection into the exact area of concern. This ensures the medication is delivered precisely where it is needed while minimising impact on surrounding structures.
Cortisone (a corticosteroid) works by reducing inflammation, which can help relieve pain and improve function. It is often used as part of a broader treatment plan, including physiotherapy or rehabilitation.
Local anaesthetic is always mixed with the cortisone, which helps to immediately reduce pain at the injection site. The procedure is usually quick and well tolerated, with most patients experiencing only mild discomfort.
After the injection, the treated area is typically rested for about one week, followed by a gradual return to normal activity. Relief may occur within a few days, although in some cases it can take longer. Your referring doctor will discuss whether this treatment is appropriate for you and guide any further management.
Cortisone injections may be performed in areas including:
- Shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, ankle and foot
- Joints affected by arthritis-related pain
- Tendons affected by tendonitis or tendinopathy
- Bursitis and frozen shoulder
- Tennis or golfer’s elbow
- Plantar fasciitis
Common indications include:

- Arthritis-related pain

Where movement slows and pain takes hold,
Within the joints, the tendons, soft and sore,
A quiet treatment, measured and precise,
May help restore what flowed with ease before.
The skin is cleansed, the pathway gently set,
And guided by the quiet eye of sound,
The radiologist, with careful hand,
Places relief exactly where it’s found.
A blend of agents works in harmony—
The cortisone to calm the hidden fire,
With local anaesthetic alongside,
To ease discomfort, just as you require.
In shoulders, hips, or knees that bear the strain,
In wrists or ankles, tendons worn with use,
It offers space for healing to begin,
A moment’s pause, a chance for pain’s release.
For one short week, the body’s asked to rest,
To let the medicine begin its course,
Then gently, slowly, movement will return,
With strength renewed, and lessened pain, of course.
And over days, sometimes a little more,
The change unfolds in quiet, steady ways—
A subtle shift toward comfort and control,
A welcome easing through the coming days.
